Prophet Ibrahim a.s. & Siti Sarah

As they approached nearer to the borders of King Nimrod’s country, Prophet Ibrahim’s heart started to beat faster. Every now and then, he glanced at the box on his camel.
Hopefully, they would not ask to check what is inside…
A few guardsmen stopped his camel as he came to the city’s gate. With no other choice, Prophet Ibrahim mounted down from the saddle. He let one of the men inspected him head to toe…

Prophet Ibrahim glanced at the guardsmen. They were indeed well equipped… Complete with all the most advanced weapons of that period of time…
I hope they let me go…
“What is in the box?”, one of the guardsmen asked.
Prophet Ibrahim did not reply.
“Open it”.

It was a command more than a request.
He had no choice.
He unbound the ropes that tied the box and out came his wife he had hidden before...
Siti Sarah looked at her husband from the corner of her eye and judging from the situation decided not to say anything.
One of the guardsmen looked upon her and sneered. “What do we have here?”
The others wolf-whistled excitedly at her sight… Siti Sarah was indeed a beautiful lady of her time…

Prophet Ibrahim did not want to panic.
“She is… She is my sister!” He told the guardsmen without looking at his wife…
“Your sister,” they sniggered. “Surely, you will have no trouble to present your lovely sister to our King Nimrod…”

In the castle, Sarah was taken in by the maids to be bathed and clothed in palace garments.
She had felt sad…

How could Ibrahim said I am his sister, and let me be taken into this castle?
But then she shook away the feelings of doubt. Surely, Ibrahim had his reasons to do so… If he had said that she was his wife, the guardsmen would probably have killed him…

She wept at the thought of her husband.
Please do not let them kill my husband…
Sarah prayed to Allah.
Only Allah is their Saviour now…

King Nimrod approached Sarah with a greedy smile on his face. She was pretty, but now that she was decorated with jewels and new clothes, she was exceptionally beautiful.
He extended a hand to touch her, but in an instant a force like an electric current seemed to hit him almost immediately.
And he crumbled to the floor in a state of pain and agony…

For weeks, the King suffered in his bed. Limp, like a vegetable. What had happened when I tried to touch the woman?
She seemed like a witch who possessed magical powers. King Nimrod asked his servants to summon Sarah…

In the other part of the country, Prophet Ibrahim was praying alone in his room…
Crying to Allah, he pleaded for his beloved wife to be kept safe…
Protect her from the lustful desires of King Nimrod oh Lord… And let her unite once again with me…
He was grateful to Allah that he was kept alive…

“Why…,”King Nimrod asked weakly within his bed. He lied down, weak, ill and desperately wanted to know from Sarah what had happened.
Sarah stood within a distance from his bed.
“You tried to touch me, when you know I have a husband”, she replied quietly. “You took me away from my husband just as how you took others wives, only to fulfil your sinful desires.”

The King silently nodded. Acknowledged his cruelty.
“I promise to repent…,” he finally said.
“I promise to repent if you pray from your God to let me be healthy again.”
Sarah looked at him, weak and tired, and felt pity towards the King.
“Will you free me too?” she asked.
The King nodded yes, and Sarah prayed to Allah to let the King be healthy again.

And for a few days, King Nimrod was able to walk again. He was thankful to Sarah, amazed at her for her ability to cure his illness and felt immense attraction towards her once again.

He knew he had promised to free her, but how could he free a woman as perfect as her?
He caught her walking alone in the palace gardens and at the sight of her alone filled his heart with desire and lust. He decided to look at her again, forgetting the promise he had made to Allah to repent, and stop his sinful behaviour…
At once, his eyes felt as if it had been shot again by that same electricity that seemed to be emitted from Sarah.

The King screamed in agony. Hands on his eyes; and suddenly he discovered he had become blind!
Why is everything so dark? Why can’t I see anymore?!

The world seemed like a useless place to live…
With his eyes blind and unable to see. He was ashamed to call Sarah again… Yet she was the only one who could help him…

“How did you do this?” It was a statement more than a question. The King lied down in bed, again, yet this time he could not see her.
“You know why”, Sarah replied. She was not accusing, only telling the truth. Both she and Nimrod knew why Allah had caused him to be blind…

“You are better off here,” Nimrod stated. “You will live in a palace, you will be clothed in rich garments, you will have servants… But why?”
“I am married, oh King”, she said simply.
Besides, I love my husband…
Silence for a few moments.

Nimrod knew that Sarah was a loyal wife. And her God protected her beyond ways he could ever imagined…

If only… I am as strong in faith as her…
“Free me, oh King, and you will never suffer again,” she promised.
Nimrod finally agreed.
“Pray for me, that I will sincerely repent this time.”

Ibrahim was called to the palace and to his delight, King Nimrod presented him his wife.
Grateful to Allah, he took Sarah to his side.
“You have a pious wife. I wish to repent just as what I promised her.”
Ibrahim nodded and prayed for the King, “May Allah show you the right way.”
And he took Sarah away, and both husband and wife thanked Allah for giving them strength to trust and be loyal to each other even in difficult times of separation…
